Building Rooftop Decks with HandyDeck Deck Tiles
The flat area on many apartment or condo rooftops offers great opportunities for conversion into relaxing or entertaining rooftop deck areas. Unfortunately far too many rooftops are left with either a drab grey concrete surface, or a black asphalt or other waterproof covering. Fortunately though, building a rooftop deck that's attractive, functional and affordable is now much easier than ever - thanks to HandyDeck deck tiles.
There’s just a few points you firstly need to check.
- In some areas, local regulations may govern what type of structures or objects can be placed on rooftops.
- Many building owners also restrict what building products can be placed on the roof, so check with your apartment owner to see if any regulations apply.
- If there's a waterproof membrane on the rooftop, care needs to be taken to avoid damaging the membrane.
With interlocking deck tiles, each tile has multiple plastic “feet” on the plastic base to distribute any load evenly over the surface below. Nevertheless some building owners may still have concerns about membrane damage. In that case we suggest laying down an EPDM sheet which costs from about 80c per sq.ft. and comes in continuous sheeting as large as 50' x 100'. You can buy EPDM in different widths with lengths up to 50' wide from specialist suppliers such as Best Materials or Resource
Conservation Technology who can also custom fabricate a single sheet to avoid seams They can also supply a complete system that includes all required adhesives, sealants etc.
Alternatively, in addition to our range of 12" x 12" interlocking tiles, HandyDeck is now importing and stocking a range of exceptionally hard and durable 24” x 24” architectural porcelain pavers from Italy.
These structural pavers can not only be laid directly on a sand or gravel bed, but can be installed on support pedestals (also stocked by HandyDeck) to create perfectly horizontal surfaces for rooftop decking. Support pedestals have a broad circular base 8” diam. thus alleviating any concerns about damage to waterproof membranes. Low rise pedestals are also available which raise the pavers just ½” off the surface.
Not only are these pavers lighter and easier to install than concrete pavers, but they are available in a range of attractive simulated stone finishes plus simulated wood.
